Albatros was a stylish schooner commissioned to protect the North American coast.
Albatros was built in Baltimore in 1840 and was fitted with a gun deck. The shape of her slim and elegant hull was inspired by French frigates that frequently came to port along the American coast.
The schooners became a popular sight first along both American coasts and later on further afield. On the west coast, they were mainly used to transport timber whereas on the east coast their main cargo was coal.
