16th & 17th century, Northern Europe
Flyboats were cargo ships used for trading and as a military auxiliary vessel.
Flyboats were originally European light vessels of 70 to 200 tons used for cargo transport. They looked like small carracks with two or three masts, a high board and a dozen guns. They were small, inexpensive and very manoeuvrable and therefore were extensively used to navigate the European coastal waters.
The military type vessel was made obsolete and replaced with the new design of the frigate.
