1637, England
A giant Great Ship as much for her practical warship considerations as for her extraordinary artistic design.
The Sovereign of the Seas was built over two years and launched in 1637 for Charles I of England. She was one of the most extraordinary sailing warships of the 17th century. She carried 102 bronze cannons and was thereby the most powerfully armed ship of the time. She was extravagantly decorated and adorned from stern to bow with gilded carvings. Her design artistic & architectural was not only for tactical considerations but also to bolster the reputation of the English Crown and her name a political statement.
The ship took part in many battles and was completely destroyed in 1697 by a fire.
