The Black Pearl is a fictional Indiaman who appears in the “Pirates of the Carribean” film series.
The Black Pearl was originally known as the Wicked Wench. Jack Sparrow’s father is one of the cruellest pirates. His son didn’t approve so Jack left home very young and went to work for the East India Trading Company under the command of Cutler Beckett. Beckett later on gives him the command of the Wicked Wench as a symbol of freedom. Jack was then asked to find the lost island of Kerma and to transport a cargo of slaves. Jack accepts the challenge but later on realises that transporting slaves is in contradiction with the spirit of freedom that the Wicked Wench implies. On finding Kerma, Jack frees the slaves. Beckett considers Jack’s actions to be treason and puts him in jail. However, Jack manages to escape but Beckett sets fire to the vessel and the Wicked Wench sinks with her captain. Dying, Jack would do anything to save himself and his ship. So he summons Davy Jones with whom he makes a bargain which stipulates that in 13 years time Jack will give his soul and 100 years aboard Jones’ Flying Dutchman in return for saving the Wicked Wench and making her the fastest ship in the world (including Jones’ ship). Upon being resurrected, the Wicked Wench has become a black vessel and Jack renames her the Black Pearl.
